Question 1

Do I need to own Fallout 4?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Fallout MP is a mod, not a game. You need your own copy of Fallout 4 on PC, and every player on a server needs one too.

Question 2

Is it finished?

Accepted Answer

No. Fallout MP is pre-alpha and under active development. There is a build you can play: it is released through the Discord rather than a download page here, which is also where changelogs and test sessions are announced.

Question 3

What actually works right now?

Accepted Answer

A shared world with a server-controlled clock and weather, players you can see move, aim and shoot, server-held inventories, doors, locks and containers, loose items, placed NPCs the server walks, voice chat, and a server-side scripting API. The features page lists each one, and says plainly what is still missing.

Question 4

Will it work with my other mods?

Accepted Answer

Assume not, for now. Mods that change the game world or its scripts will desynchronise players. Cosmetic mods are more likely to survive, but nothing is guaranteed while the mod is pre-alpha.

Question 5

How many players can share a server?

Accepted Answer

A server holds 32 players out of the box, and the owner can raise that. The networking is not what stops you - it scales well past that number - so in practice the limit is the host’s hardware and how much work the server’s scripts do per tick.

Question 6

Can I run my own server?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The server is a dedicated binary for Windows and Linux, configured by a single server.json, with its own folder of resources. It is announced in the public masterlist only when you give it a server token, so a private server stays private.

Question 7

What language do I write server scripts in?

Accepted Answer

TypeScript or JavaScript. Resources are folders the server loads at startup, written against the same API the default gamemode uses. The scripting page carries the full reference, generated from the server itself.

Question 8

Does it work on Xbox or PlayStation?

Accepted Answer

No. Fallout MP is PC only and depends on modifying the game client, which consoles do not allow.

Question 9

Is this made by Bethesda?

Accepted Answer

No. Fallout MP is an independent fan project with no connection to Bethesda Softworks or ZeniMax Media.
